Anyone play wizard 101? Pay by area just sounds weird to me.

@ghostryder — I’ve played it. It works very well, and it’s well-designed to allow parents to limit the content their children have access to (since that’s the game’s main target audience). For non-MMOers it’s also less scary to pay a little than to pay a full sub (we MMO players accept the subscription model, but most non-MMOers find it really weird).
Some additions for the pricing structure:
SOE Games Station Pass — $29.99/month, gives unlimited access to Everquest, Everquest 2, Pirates of the Burning Sea, Planetside, Star Wars Galaxies, Vanguard, EQ Online Adventures and Free Realms. (Expensive if you only play on of those games, but a good deal after that.)
EQ2’s sub price breakdown is the same as EQ’s — as far as I can recall all their premium MMOs are that price (SWG, Vanguard).
Nice list!

Okay, I updated the breakdown with the SOE Station Access subscription info. Good catch Ysharros!
I can’t imagine paying $29.99 a month to play any of those games.

You need to play at least 2 for it to be worthwhile (since you get some goodies like extra char slots for having the Pass). Nobody in their right mind would pay for the Pass if they’re only playing one game — well, maybe they would, who knows.
If you’re saying all those games are crap… it’s your blog. 😉

Oh okay. I suppose we should expect some new pricing structures. That makes sense, and actually I’d like to see some more creative revenue generating techniques and pricing structures/techniques.
PS: Never underestimate what someone “in their right mind” would do.

When I read “creative revenue generating techniques” all I can think of is in-game advertisement. Yuck.

The only game I would even be remotely interested in is Pirates of the Burning Sea. Otherwise, a good portion of them are MMOs that should be free-to-play by now. The fact that SOE still charges for the original EverQuest is just ridiculous. About as bad as Turbine still charging to play the original Asheron’s Call.
Who knew Planetside still existed?

I would argue that’s a matter of games preference. There’s no reason EQ2 should be free to play any more than WoW is (or isn’t), since it certainly has as much content or more (certainly a great deal more for my style of non-raiding play). I can’t currently speak for any of the others, though admittedly SOE has made a niche for itself out of keeping small-scale or “dying” games on life support.
One thing I do know is that if those games weren’t somehow generating revenue for SOE, they wouldn’t be there. The Matrix is one of the more recent examples.

@Ysharros –
It is interesting to think that people are still playing games like Asheron’s Call and Everquest. Good point about SOE keeping small-scale games on life support.
I have no experience when it comes to Everquest 2. From what I have seen, I would think that its current pricing model certainly fits what content the game has to offer. Do you play EQ2? If so, do you like it versus say World of Warcraft?
